Proverbs 8:22-31

All the Treasures of Wisdom and Knowledge

Let me steal my short devotion today from Wiersbe’s commentary on Proverbs. He really nails it regarding the identity of wisdom as it’s personified in the book of proverbs and especially in chapter 8. He writes: In Jesus Christ “are hid all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge” (Col. 2:3), and He is our wisdom (1 Cor. 1:24, 30). Solomon was the wisest ruler who ever lived, and yet Jesus Christ is “greater than Solomon” in both His wisdom and His wealth (Matt. 12:42). Certainly all the beautiful qualities of wisdom described in Proverbs are seen in Jesus Christ, and His earthly walk is a pattern for God’s people to follow (1 John 2:6).

Proverbs 10:11

A Fountain of Life

Our speech, tongue, mouth and words are often addressed in the book of Proverbs. In Chapter 10 we are exhorted not to talk too much, but when we do it should be of such nature that it brings encouragement to others. Verse 11 says, “The mouth of the righteous is a fountain of life…” We should keep that in mind in all our conversations.

Proverbs 7:1

Pass it on!

Loving, Learning and Living are the three terms we use at Country Bible Church to describe a disciple of Jesus Christ. Upon accepting God’s love, expressed to us on Calvary’s cross, a believer then returns that love in worship and obedience. A disciple is a learner who is hungry for God’s Word and for understanding God’s truth in all its marvelous facets. A disciple follows through by living out God’s instruction in their daily lives.

Proverbs 6:6

Discipline & Diligence

Discipline and diligence are two prominent themes in the book of Proverbs. They show up over and over again. Chapter six is classic in verse 6. It says, “Take a lesson from the ants, you lazybones. Learn from their ways and become wise!”

Proverbs 1:7

Taking God Seriously

The key phrase in the Book of Proverbs is found in at least 18 references. (1:7, 29; 2:5; 3:7; 8:13; 9:10; 10:27; 14:2, 26-27; 15:16, 33; 16:6; 19:23; 22:4; 23:17; 24:21; 31:30). It’s also found in Job 28:28 and Psalm 111.10. Briefly summarized it says, “The fear of the Lord is the beginning of Wisdom.” We will never be all that we can be until we take God seriously. Proverbs 8:34

The Wisest Man In the World

When Solomon was offered the opportunity to ask God for anything he wanted, he didn’t ask for gold, fame, or pleasures. He asked God for wisdom. According to 1 Kings 4:29f, God granted his request. It says, “And God gave Solomon wisdom and understanding beyond measure, and breadth of mind like the sand on the seashore, so that Solomon’s wisdom surpassed the wisdom of all the people of the east and all the wisdom of Egypt. For he was wiser than all other men…He also spoke 3,000 proverbs, and his songs were 1,005.” In Matthew 12:42 Jesus confirms the Old Testament historical account of the great wisdom of Solomon. In this quote, Jesus also commends the Queen of the South. He says, “The queen of the South…came from the ends of the earth to hear the Wisdom of Solomon…” View full article »

Proverbs 1:7

The Beginning of Wisdom

The world’s economy used to be based on agriculture. During the industrial revolution the economy shifted to an economy of production. The age of the machine took over as the basis of the economy. Now we’re in what is called the “information age.” Since the advent of the computer knowledge has increased exponentially and there is now at your fingertips more information about absolutely everything in the world than has ever been available before. Although there is more information and more knowledge available at any time in history there seems to be an increasing lack of wisdom. “Where is the wisdom we have lost in knowledge?” asked the late British poet, T.S. Eliot. View full article »
