The psalmist cries out in Psalm 53 with a bold and uncompromising truth: it is only a foolish person who can look at the beauty, order, and majesty of creation—and still deny the existence of God. Verse 1 declares, “The fool says in his heart, ‘There is no God.’” Why does Scripture call such a person a fool? Because unbelief is not a problem of evidence—it is a problem of the heart. The evidence for God is overwhelming. The design of the universe points to a Designer. Moral law points to a Lawgiver. Life itself points to a Lifegiver. To deny the obvious is not brilliance; it is blindness.
C. S. Lewis exposed the flaw of atheism in his classic work Mere Christianity. He wrote, “Atheism turns out to be too simple. If the whole universe has no meaning, we should never have found out that it has no meaning: Just as, if there were no light in the universe and therefore no creatures with eyes, we should never know it was dark. ‘Dark’ would be without meaning.” His point is clear—meaning cannot come from meaninglessness. Truth cannot come from chaos. Morality cannot come from accident. The very fact that humans seek purpose shows that we were created by a purposeful God.
Atheism is not a logical conclusion—it is often a convenient one. The psalmist explains why people deny God: “They are corrupt, and their ways are vile; there is no one who does good.” In other words, if we can erase God from our thinking, then we can erase moral accountability. If there is no God, then there is no judgment. If there is no judgment, then we are free to live however we want. Atheism, then, is not just an intellectual argument—it is a moral escape. It is not the mind that rejects God first—it is the rebellious heart.
But denial never changes reality. Every person has a sin problem. Every person falls short of God’s standard. That is why 1 John 1:8-9 reminds us, “If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.” The answer to mankind’s corruption is not rehabilitation—it is regeneration. Education cannot cure sin. Government cannot cure sin. Religion cannot cure sin. Only God can transform the human heart. Jesus was right when He said, “You must be born again.” Real wisdom begins not by denying God—but by surrendering to Him.
