In the description of all the temple furnishings, we learn that Solomon set up two pillars in the vestibule of the temple. The interesting thing is that in verse 21 of chapter 7, he names these two pillars. One is named “Jachin” and the other is named “Boaz.”

There have been many suggestions regarding the significance of these names but the best suggestion I’ve encountered concerns itself with the actual meaning of the words themselves. Jachin means “He will establish.” I would refer that back to God’s promise to David with regards to his dynasty which would be established forever. There would be a King, an heir of David, a seed of David, whose house and reign would be established forever. Nathan the prophet passed on this promise from God to David. In 1 Chronicles 17:14, He said, “I will set him over my house and my kingdom forever; his throne will be established forever.” Both Matthew and Luke go to great lengths to establish the fact that Jesus was indeed the rightful heir of David.

Boaz means “in his strength.” The scriptures use the phrase “The right hand of God” as a symbolic reference to God’s strength and His power. There will be a permanent Kingdom. It will be established by God’s power, not by man’s power. When questioned by the high priest before his crucifixion, they asked him if he was the rightful son of David. Jesus answered with that’s right, but that’s only the half of the truth. Matthew 26:64 goes on, Jesus replied, “You have said it. And in the future you will see the Son of Man seated in the place of power at God’s right hand and coming on the clouds of heaven.”

Jesus’ permanent reign and the establishment of the kingdom with power are two important pillars of our faith.
