Jesus quoted Leviticus 19:18 as the being the second greatest commandment, next only to loving God above anything else.  “You must love your neighbor as you love yourself.” The first five of the 10 commandments refer to loving God.

The second five refer to loving your neighbor. The sixth commandment says if you love your neighbor you will not harm him. You shall not kill. The 7th commandment reinforces sexual morality. Love of one’s neighbor will respect the marriage vows of others. The eighth commandment says, “You shall not steal.” The ninth commandment warns against lying. Respect for truth and for property is the foundation for a just and orderly society. The liar and talebearer (v. 16) is a menace to public safety and peace, particularly if he or she is a lying witness in court.
