God resists the proud… but he has a stronger disapproval of the defiant. Numbers 15:30 says, “The person who does anything defiantly, whether he is native or alien, that one is blaspheming the Lord; and that person shall be cut off from among his people.” Defiant sin is to deliberately and meditatively embrace sin as an acceptable lifestyle. Duguid says, “Such persons could not have their sins forgiven through the sacrificial system because they had no desire for the relationship with God that the system was designed to restore. Until their proud defiance was broken, they could not

have fellowship with God. As long as they remained in such a defiant state, they did not belong as part of God’s people…” “The defiant one” is a phrase that has been used to define Satan. That’s his primary quality. Nigel Wright, in his book entitled, “The Satan Syndrome,” says, “The thoroughly evil nature of the devil consists in the fact that here we have spontaneous, self-generating sin expressed in pure defiance and pure arrogance.”

To defy God, and intentional violate his instructions for godly living are satanic characteristics. When you encounter those who boast of their defiance, you encounter a child of Satan. They have bought into the old lie. Thomas Brooks said it well, “Satan promises the best, but pays with the worst; he promises honor and pays with disgrace; he promises pleasure and pays with pain; he promises profit and pays with loss; he promises life and pays with death.”James tells us all, “Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. Draw near to God, and he will draw near to you.  Cleanse your hands, you sinners, and purify your hearts, you double-minded.” (James 4:7-8)
