Jeremy, JD, D, was born on March 29, 1973. He was the first baby born at the new Navy Hospital at the Naval Air Station in Corpus Christi, Texas.  Jean and Freddie Shively, Kathy’s mom and dad came to live with us in Corpus Christi around the time that JD was born and Jean really took care of JD when he was a baby. JD was only 15 months old when we left Corpus to move to Hawaii. 1973 05 00 jd with js in corpus W91 (2)1973 12 25 jd in backyard corpus P51 (2) He was a very good baby and spent a lot of time in the backyard of our house in Corpus. He had a few health problems after his birth but they were taken care of fairly quickly at the Hospital. We had a great deal of trouble coming up with a name for him. I wanted to give him the first name of Elliott after my great grandparents on my father’s side, but Kathy didn’t like. I wanted to call him Eli! I guess it was after the song by Three Dog Night, “Eli’s Comin.” I also liked Jeremiah, after another song lyric that said, “Jeremiah was a bullfrog, a good friend of mine.” But Kathy didn’t want him named after some popular song. He did end up with the name Jeremiah Dane, but not because of the song. We couldn’t agree on the name and when the nurse came into the Hospital room insisting on a name Kathy had just read the morning headlines that had the story of the release of the prisoners of war from Vietnam. The most senior Navy POW was Captain Jeremiah Denton, later to become Admiral and then Senator Denton from the State of Alabama. I didn’t want him named after some stranger so I insisted that “D” become Dane. So he became Jeremiah Dane Larsen. We always called him Jeremy but when he grew up he didn’t like being called Jeremy, I never did find out why, and he started going by JD. That was alright but eventually it deteriorated into just “D.” I don’t know how that happened but it was his decision. From Corpus we moved to Hawaii where JD started to grow up fast. I like to think he was a daddy’s boy during those years even though I wasn’t around the Hawaii house very much. Most of my time was spent aboard the USS RATHBURNE in the western Pacific.  1974 00 00 jd and c2 on couch Af1 (2)
